HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Delta Delta Delta settles $150,000 lawsuit following a data breach that compromised its members’ sensitive information
  • Affected members can receive up to $5,000 in compensation
  • The deadline to file a claim is February 3, 2025

Members of the sorority group Delta Delta Delta (Tri-Delta) are eligible to receive up to $5,000 in compensation from a class action lawsuit over a data breach that exposed its members’ sensitive information.

The case, amounting to $150,000, stemmed from a hacking incident that compromised its members’ information such as names, addresses, social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account information, among others, in March last year.

According to plaintiffs, the organization should have implemented reasonable cybersecurity measures to protect its member’s information. Tri-Delta did not admit to any wrongdoing but said that the settlement was to avoid uncertainties of further litigation.

Settlement Terms

Under the settlement terms, class members who have received a notification letter from the group that their personal information may have been compromised will be able to receive a cash payment for out-of-pocket expenses and lost time.

Up to $5,000 will be paid to affected members with unreimbursed data breach expenses, such as fraudulent charges, identity theft costs, and credit expenses, among others.

Meanwhile, $20 per hour of lost time will be disbursed, a maximum of four hours, for a total of $80.

Members who did not experience any losses or lost time are still eligible to receive an alternative cash payment of $75 as a payment for their personal information that may have been compromised.

On top of the cash payments, all class members are eligible to receive three years of free identity theft protection and credit-monitoring services. The services include identity theft monitoring, alerts, three-bureau credit monitoring, fraud resolution and identity theft insurance coverage for certain costs, identity restoration, and unauthorized electronic fund transfers.

In addition, Tri-Delta agreed to improve its security measures to protect member information, for upgrades valued at $86,300. The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 3, 2025.

Meanwhile, the final approval hearing for the Tri-Delta data breach settlement is scheduled for March 10, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by February 3, 2025, along with documentation of expenses, such as bills, receipts, account statements, and invoices, among others.

Founded in 1888, Tri-Delta is a non-profit women’s organization based in Texas that focuses on its members’ personal development and growth. It has so far 250,000 members worldwide.

At present, Tri-Delta operates 142 collegiate chapters on campuses across North America and more than 250 alumnae chapters globally.
